Activists who campaign for organic food find support from preppers. They understand the idea that “government is a conspiracy and corporations are evil”. But what really made Prepper anti-GMO food activists is their desire for a healthy post-apocalyptic lifestyle.

Yes, the preppers turned green. All kinds of advice can be found on blogs like The Organic Prepper and The Sustainable Prepper. And there is a thriving home industry of healthy prepper products. At Amazon you can buy the “Survival Seed Doomsday Preppers Kit Non-GMO Emergency Seed Supply with Extra Protein”.

If you are looking for a “survival seed safe” then Texas Ready is it promise They are “the best non-GMO, non-hybrid seed banks out there”. Or you can buy Liquid Aminos (“a great alternative to soy sauces, which are mostly GMO”) from Happy Preppers. website. (Her motto: “We believe the happiest people on earth are the ones who have prepared should the unthinkable happen. Take it from us, the happiest contingency planners in the world, that you can thrive with a positive mental attitude.” )

Support the cause

All in all, it was a festive atmosphere at the Arizona Prepper Fest last March. In the official Prepper Fest program, you might find out how to join a group called “Eid Keepers” who “will mobilize to protect this country from a tyrannical takeover … if and when the dreaded” executive orders “at the discretion of the president to be executed have started. ” In addition, one could read a manifesto entitled “Conspiracy Theory vs. Coincidence Theory: The GMO Health Crisis” which said:

The facts are clear that our country is facing a growing health crisis of epic proportions, with dramatically increasing rates of all kinds of diseases including autism, cancer, celiac disease, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, intestinal tract diseases, immune system diseases, and ulcerative colitis Obesity to name a few. Most of these disease rates began to rise around the time Monsanto introduced genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into our food supplies.

Many preppers are accused of being “conspiracy theorists” and their concerns are often branded as unfounded by the media, but the media usually does little or no research into the concerns before rejecting them.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Anyone with questions about GMOs was directed to speak to Jared Keen. He’s not a prepper, he’s an anti-GMO activist, the founder of Plant Based Nation and the director of Right to know arizona. At a table in the Prepper Fest pavilion, Keen asked for signatures for an initiative that requires GMO food to be labeled on the state election.

An Arizona Republic reporter who was in the pavilion described the scene:

“There has never been an issue where government inaction, corporate inaction and an unstable political system are linked,” Keen told a Flagstaff man in a cloak of magic who passed his table. “This is your chance to take a stand and be part of it.”

His words were interrupted by the sound of electric stun guns being sold on the table across from him.

The petition has come a long way, admits Keen. Nevertheless, he is of the opinion that the effort was worth it. “If that doesn’t make it onto the ballot,” he said, “we’re (still) effective in educating large numbers of people.”

Keen only collected about half of the 172,000 signatures he needed. But preppers are doing their part elsewhere: asking for signatures, pushing for local laws to declare their community GM-free, boycotting farmers who grow GMO crops, and taking part in protests against GMO companies like Monsanto.

Keep America Safe for the Apocalypse

Given the conspiratorial tone of the anti-GMO movement and its emphasis on healthier living through self-reliance, it’s not difficult to see why it is resonating with preppers.

But for the preppers there is an added dimension to this problem. Remember, these people are sure that the end of civilization is coming – and they see GMOs as a direct threat to their plans to be the last men, women and children to survive.

Here are examples of what some preppers believe about GMOs:

GMOs could cause the demise of civilization but leave no survivors behind

“The end of the world as we know it may not be the result of a terrible natural disaster or an act of terrorism from overseas,” warns the bio prepper. “It can be as simple as pollen floating from one field to contaminate the next, until we starve or die of cancer amid an abundance of juicy-looking, fresh-farm poison.”

GMOs are the means by which the government repeals the constitution and proclaims martial law

Why rely on jack-boot thugs, black helicopters, and executive orders when you can create a national crisis, incapacitate citizens, and kill the population – just by adding toxins and viruses to the food supply?

“Think about it. It’s an easy way for the government to kill people.” says Francine Romesburg, prepper and presenter of the GrassRoots Tea Party Activists of Glendale, AZ. “Our government is trying to kill us with food and we are just trying to find out and they are trying to hide it from us.”

GMOs cause infertility

Are you planning to repopulate the world? Think again, warn junk science articles such as one about the Happy Prepper website: “If you feed your children GMO products like the big branded corn flakes, they can become sterile! If you want grandchildren, all you have to do is become a label reader and look for the NON-GMO project seal. Buy only organic fruits and Vegetables as well as grass-fed beef only (because other cattle were fed GMO corn) In studies on animals like hamsters fed GMO soy products, they lost the ability to have third generation offspring. “

(Also: “Accelerated aging has occurred in animal experiments. Of course, it is possible that the same effect can occur in humans.”) Of course.

GMOs will contaminate our plants

A prepper explained his rationale for trying to prevent the spread of GMO plants:

I’ve seen little if nothing was mentioned about an initiative in my small community that would ban GMO crops within the boundaries of our island district. And the truth is, while there are few places in the world that could effectively stay GMO-free, the San Juan Islands in Washington state are one of them.

If an initiative measure is passed in our county in November, the cultivation of plants, livestock and other organisms whose genes have been deliberately modified so that they did not occur through mating or natural recombination will be prohibited. We would essentially become a safe zone for non-GMO crops, which in turn preserves our ability to grow and control our food supplies for years to come.

Don’t underestimate this contamination problem as it poses a major dilemma for those who prefer or need to grow their own food.

As far as I can tell, the only way to eliminate these problems is to grow GM-free crops and prevent our neighbors’ crops from contaminating our own gardens and fields.

GMOs use the “Terminator” biotechnology

It is true that Monsanto developed a “terminator” gene that makes plants sterile. But it has never launched a Terminator Seed and is committed not to.

However, prepper blogs and websites keep warning that planting GMO seeds would leave them without food within a year. Some believe that there is a hidden Terminator virus waiting to take action. Another easy explained, “Most seed companies now only sell ‘Terminator’ seeds that have been genetically engineered and will not self-reproduce.”

The only junk science conspiracy theory I haven’t come across is that GMOs could release a zombie virus. Because that would be crazy after all.
